Your windscreen is not just a piece of glass — it is a structural component of your vehicle. In a rollover accident, the windscreen helps prevent the roof from collapsing. The adhesive that bonds the windscreen to the frame needs time to cure to full strength. Driving too soon can compromise the bond, create leaks, or even cause the windscreen to detach.

Minimum Safe Drive-Away Time: 1 Hour

For most modern vehicles using high-quality polyurethane adhesive, the minimum safe drive-away time is one hour. This gives the adhesive enough initial strength to hold the windscreen in place during normal driving conditions.

However, one hour is the absolute minimum. We always recommend waiting longer if possible — especially in cold or wet weather.

Full Structural Strength: 24 Hours

While the adhesive is strong enough after one hour, it takes approximately 24 hours to reach full structural strength. During this time, the adhesive continues to cure and harden. For maximum safety, we recommend:

  • Avoiding car washes for 24 hours — high-pressure water can weaken the seal
  • Avoiding slamming doors — the pressure change can stress the fresh adhesive
  • Keeping speeds moderate — excessive wind pressure at high speeds can stress the bond
  • Avoiding rough roads — vibration and flexing can disturb the curing adhesive

What Affects Curing Time?

  • Temperature: Adhesive cures faster in warm weather (above 20°C) and slower in cold weather (below 10°C). In winter, we may recommend a longer wait time.
  • Humidity: High humidity can slow curing. We take this into account when advising drive-away times.
  • Adhesive type: Some modern fast-cure adhesives reach initial strength in 30 minutes, but we still recommend one hour minimum. Standard adhesives may need longer.
  • Vehicle type: Larger vehicles with heavier windscreens (vans, utes, buses) may need longer curing times due to the increased weight and stress on the adhesive.

Can I Drive in the Rain?

Yes, light rain is fine after the minimum drive-away time. However, we recommend avoiding heavy rain and standing water on the windscreen for the first 24 hours if possible. The adhesive is waterproof once cured, but during the curing process, excessive moisture can interfere with the bond.
